AI Copy Generation
Draft campaign and communication copy in your church's voice, then edit and publish it yourself
Writing the same event three ways for email, Instagram, and the pre-service slides takes time. With AI Copy Generation, you click ✨ Generate and get two drafts, Option A and Option B. Both are written from your campaign details and in your Church Voice, so they already sound like your church. You pick one, edit it if you want, and it drops into your copy fields.
AI Copy Generation is a Plus feature.
1. Before you start
Three things need to be in place before Generate works:
- AI Features are on. An Owner or Admin turns them on and accepts the AI terms.
- Church Voice is set up. An Owner or Admin describes how your church sounds.
- You can edit the item. You need edit rights to the campaign or communication in the workspace you're in.
Who can do what:
| Action | Owner | Admin | Manager | Editor | Viewer |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Turn AI Features on or off | ✓ | ✓ | — | — | — |
| Create or edit Church Voice | ✓ | ✓ | — | — | — |
| Click Generate | ✓ | ✓ | — | ✓ | — |
Managers and Viewers see Generate greyed out.
2. Turn on AI Features (Owners and Admins)
- Profile menu → Admin console → Church Profile
- Find the AI Features card and click Turn on
- Read the Turn on AI features window. It explains:
- When someone clicks Generate, your Church Voice, the campaign or communication, and any instructions they type are sent to our AI providers.
- Contact lists, billing, and your team's personal details are never sent.
- Don't include sensitive personal details about individuals, such as prayer requests, health, or pastoral care.
- AI drafts can be wrong, so review everything before you publish.
- You can turn AI off anytime.
- Tick On behalf of my church, I agree… (links to the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy)
- Click Turn on AI features
If your church doesn't have a Church Voice yet, the Set up Church Voice window opens right away (see the next section).
The card's badge shows where things stand:
- On — AI is active.
- Off — AI hasn't been turned on, or someone turned it off.
- Review — AI was on, but the AI terms have changed and need to be accepted again. See When the AI terms change below.
3. Set up your Church Voice (Owners and Admins)
Church Voice tells the AI how your church sounds: warm or formal, playful or plain, the words you use and the ones you avoid. Every Generate draft uses it.
Open it from Admin Console → Church Profile → AI Features → Church Voice → Create (or Edit once it exists). It has three parts.
Voice & Tone (required). Describe how your church should sound, in 40 to 2,000 characters. For example: "Warm, conversational, clear, and encouraging. We want to sound like a real person, not a corporation. Playful occasionally, but never cheesy." Save Voice stays greyed out until you reach 40 characters.
Language Guidelines (optional, up to 30). Each row is Don't say → Use instead, for example Sanctuary → Worship Center.
- Leave Use instead blank to ban a word or phrase.
- Leave Don't say blank to mark a term the AI should always prefer.
Writing Examples (optional, up to 5). Paste an email, social post, website section, or announcement that feels like your church, up to 3,000 characters each. The AI studies the style and never copies the text. One good example is plenty.
Click Save Voice. Saving again replaces the previous version.
Setting it up right after turning AI on: The window is titled Set up Church Voice. If you choose Finish later, you'll be reminded that Generate buttons won't work until Church Voice is saved. You can come back anytime from Admin Console → Church Profile → AI Features.
4. Generate campaign copy
On a campaign page, ✨ Generate sits in the Campaign Messaging header. It writes all three lengths at once: Long, Medium, and Short Copy.
Before you generate, give the AI something to work with:
- A campaign title
- An Event Description (under Event Details) of about 80 characters or more
The AI also uses the other campaign details you've filled in: audience, tags, dates, event times, registration or content links, notes, and any copy that's already there. The more you fill in, the better the drafts.
When you click Use option A or Use option B, Communicate fills in and saves Long, Medium, and Short Copy, replacing what was there. You'll see AI draft applied. Linked communications can then Pull from campaign as usual.
Edits still saving when you click Generate are saved first, so nothing is lost.
5. Generate copy for a communication
On an existing communication: Open it and click ✨ Generate beside the Copy heading. The window is named for the channel, for example Generate Instagram copy.
While adding a new communication: In the Add Communication window, expand Content and click ✨ Generate beside Copy. Pick a channel first; the button stays greyed out until you do.
Drafts follow the channel's usual style. A text message comes out short and direct, a newsletter section runs longer, and slides stay readable at a glance. Communicate has built-in guidance for texting, X/Twitter, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, email, newsletter, website, pre-service slides, service announcements, the mobile app, YouTube, online ads, TV and lobby screens, podcast, worship guide, and more. Custom channels get sensible medium-length copy.
The AI also uses the communication's title and date, plus the linked campaign's details and copy.
Use option A or Use option B:
- Existing communication: Replaces the copy and saves right away.
- New communication: Fills the Copy box. Nothing is saved until you add the communication.
6. Using the Generate window
The Generate window works the same way everywhere.
Step 1: Choose your preferences. Generate doesn't start writing until you click Generate in the window.
- Length — Short, Standard, or Detailed (communications only; campaigns always get all three lengths)
- Emojis — None, Light, or More
- Hashtags — Off or On
- Instructions (optional) — anything extra, like "Focus more on families"
Step 2: Pick a draft. Option A and Option B appear side by side. You can edit either one right in the window. Click Select on the one you want, then Use option A or Use option B.
Not quite right? Regenerate. Under the drafts, type what to change in Feedback (optional), for example "Less cheesy", then click Regenerate. Click Adjust to change Length, Emojis, or Hashtags first. Your original instructions still apply.
A few rules the AI always follows:
- Length, emojis, and hashtags follow your choices, even if feedback, your Church Voice, or the channel style suggests otherwise.
- Drafts use your preferred terms from Language Guidelines and never use your banned ones.
Your Emojis and Hashtags choices are remembered in your browser for next time. Length always starts at Standard.
7. Privacy and good habits
- Keep personal details out. Don't put names tied to prayer requests, health updates, pastoral care, or other sensitive information in campaign fields, notes, or instructions you generate from.
- Always review before publishing. AI can get dates, names, or details wrong. Treat every draft as a first draft.
- Tune your Church Voice over time. If drafts keep missing, add a Language Guideline or a better Writing Example instead of fixing the same thing every time.
For details on what's sent and how it's handled, see the Privacy Policy.
8. Monthly usage
Plus includes a monthly AI usage allowance for your church. Each Generate and each Church Voice save counts toward it. The allowance resets on the 1st of each month.
If the allowance runs out, Generate shows AI is unavailable right now. Try again next month, or contact [email protected] if you need more sooner.
When the AI terms change
When we update the AI terms, the AI Features badge changes to Review and the card shows AI terms updated. Generate and Church Voice pause until someone accepts the new terms.
- Owners and Admins: Click Review, read the Review updated AI terms window, tick the agreement, and click Accept & continue. Your Church Voice is kept.
- Editors: Hovering Generate shows that an Owner or Admin needs to accept the new terms.
Turning AI off
Owners and Admins can click Turn off on the AI Features card. This disables every Generate button for your whole church. Your Church Voice is kept, and you can turn AI back on anytime.
Troubleshooting: Generate is greyed out
The Generate button stays visible but greyed out until everything is ready. Hover over it to see the first thing that's missing.
| Hover message | What to do |
|---|---|
| AI features are off… | An Owner or Admin turns them on in Admin Console → Church Profile. |
| Our AI terms were updated… | An Owner or Admin clicks Review on the AI Features card and accepts the new terms. |
| Set up Church Voice in Church Profile first. | An Owner or Admin creates the Church Voice. |
| Add a campaign title… | Give the campaign a title. |
| Add a fuller campaign description (about 80+ characters)… | Fill in Event Description under Event Details. |
| Wait for your title and description to finish saving… | Wait a moment and try again. |
| Choose a channel first. | Pick a channel in the Add Communication window. |
| You don't have permission to edit campaigns (or …to create communications) | Ask an Owner or Admin about your role. Managers and Viewers can't generate. |
| AI … copy is not available for this account. | Your church isn't on Plus, or your role doesn't include AI. |
| Checking AI features… / Checking Church Voice… | Still loading. Wait a moment. |
Multi-campus churches (Plus): Generate follows the same rules as editing. On a global campaign, switch to the Global workspace. On a campus-owned campaign, open it from the campus workspace that owns it. If your membership is limited to specific campuses, you can't generate on global campaigns. See Workspace and Multi-campus (Plus).
On a communication, a short note next to Generate may also point you to the fix, such as Turn on AI features to generate, Set up Church Voice to generate, or Switch to the global workspace to generate.
Generate opened but shows "AI is unavailable right now." Your church may have used this month's AI allowance (see Monthly usage above), or the AI service may be briefly unavailable. Wait a minute and try again, and contact support if it keeps happening.
